The Founding Purpose of Tumaini Academy

Tumaini Academy, located in Busia County, Kenya, was established in 2016 with a compassionate mission: to provide access to education for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. The community of Busia has been deeply affected by the HIV epidemic, with many families losing parents to the disease. As a result, a significant number of children have been left behind—vulnerable, impoverished, and in urgent need of care and opportunity. Tumaini Academy was created to address this crisis, becoming a place of refuge where education and hope go hand in hand. It was founded to offer not just academics, but also a supportive environment for healing, belonging, and growth.

Impact, Leadership, and Current Reach

Today, Tumaini Academy is home to over 363 children, most of whom are HIV orphans or street-involved youth. The school has grown into a vital institution within the community, offering quality primary education and support services to some of the most marginalized children in Busia. These students, many of whom have faced extreme hardship, are now given the tools to envision and pursue a brighter future. The school operates under the dedicated leadership of Justine Nayango Wandera, whose unwavering commitment has been instrumental in guiding the school’s growth and maintaining its mission-driven approach. Through Tumaini Academy, these children are not only educated but also empowered to rise above their circumstances.
