John Okello: A Visionary Advocate for Education and Change
My Story
In 2001, amidst the vibrant energy of Nairobi, John Okello was born. His early years were a mix of challenges and determination, setting the stage for a life defined by resilience and hope. In 2016, John’s path crossed with Harvest of Hope Africa (HOHA) when he joined Friends Children Centre, a school under the HOHA umbrella that serves as a sanctuary for young minds with big dreams.
Friends Children Centre was more than just a stepping stone for John; it became a place of transformation. It offered him a chance to escape the uncertainty of his circumstances and embrace the promise of education. His dedication and perseverance saw him transition to Matayos Mt. Olive Secondary School (MMOSS), another pivotal project under HOHA.
“At MMOSS, we had our share of struggles,” John recalls. “We lacked adequate teachers, classrooms, and basic facilities like science labs, a library, water, and electricity. But we never gave up. We knew that education was our key to a better future.” Despite the hardships, John thrived, his faith and determination acting as his anchor.
Determined to push past limitations, John pursued higher education at Kirinyaga University, where he majored in Mathematics and Computer Studies as part of a Bachelor of Education in Science program. His journey at university was not without challenges, but his unwavering belief in the power of education kept him going. John graduated with pride, ready to give back to the community that had shaped him.
Today, John has returned to MMOSS, not just as an alumnus but as a volunteer teacher dedicated to creating opportunities for others. Teaching Mathematics and Computer Studies, he is a source of inspiration for current students. “I know what it’s like to struggle,” he says. “I want to be the mentor I needed when I was their age.”
Beyond teaching, John is a passionate advocate for improving MMOSS’s infrastructure. He urges fellow alumni to contribute towards equipping the school with essential facilities. “We need a computer lab, a library, and science labs. These resources are critical for the success of our students,” he emphasizes. John believes that by uniting as a community, they can transform MMOSS into a beacon of excellence.
Despite the challenges he faced, John’s message to current MMOSS students is clear and uplifting: “Work hard, persevere, and never stop believing in your dreams. If I could overcome the obstacles, so can you.”
John envisions a future where MMOSS becomes a hub of opportunity, not just for academic success but also for nurturing hope in every learner. His story is a living testament to HOHA’s mission: giving every life a living hope in Christ Jesus.
Through his life, John Okello exemplifies the power of education, faith, and community. His journey is a reminder that when you invest in others, you ignite a ripple effect of transformation and hope that lasts for generations.
