David Were: A Beacon of Hope and Transformation Through Christ

On August 8, 1997, in the vibrant streets of Kawangware, a boy named David Lusaha was born. Raised by a single mother, David’s early life was a story of struggle and determination. Without a steady foundation for his education or family support, his future seemed uncertain. Yet, even in the face of adversity, God was writing a greater story for David—a story of hope, resilience, and transformation.

In 2013, David’s life took a pivotal turn when his mother encountered Fredrick Munuku, the patron of Harvest of Hope Africa (HOHA). This encounter was not just a meeting but a divine appointment, marking the beginning of David’s journey to a brighter future. Guided by HOHA’s mission to give every life a living hope in Christ Jesus, David found the support he so desperately needed to overcome the challenges that had defined his childhood.

David’s academic journey began at Friends Children Centre, a school under the HOHA umbrella and one of its first transformative projects. But it was at Mt. Olive Secondary School—a secondary school launched by HOHA—that his life truly transformed. As one of the first cohort members in 2016, David stepped into a new chapter of life filled with both challenges and possibilities. Mt. Olive’s early days were marked by humble beginnings. With Fredrick Munuku as their only teacher, the students learned not just academics but the essence of perseverance and faith. “I was Admission Number 8,” David recalls with pride, “and I saw firsthand how determination and faith can build something extraordinary.”

For David, education was more than a path to knowledge—it was a lifeline. Through HOHA’s support, he gained not only academic skills but also spiritual growth that anchored him through life’s storms. HOHA saved him from a potential future on the streets, sparing him from the traps of gangs and a life of despair. Instead, he found a family in HOHA, where Christ’s love and the power of community gave him the strength to dream again.

David’s journey continued at PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute, where he pursued Social Work and Community Service. Now on the verge of graduating in July 2025, David stands as a testimony to the transformative power of education, faith, and resilience. “HOHA gave me the tools to communicate better, to live in harmony with others, and, most importantly, to grow spiritually,” he reflects.

On June 23, 2024, David returned to Mt. Olive Secondary School—not as a student, but as a man shaped by God’s grace and a desire to give back. Standing before the students, he shared his story, reminding them that no challenge is too great when faced with faith and determination. David’s message was clear: “HOHA is not just a school or an organization; it is a second home, a place where dreams are nurtured, and lives are changed through Christ.”

Looking to the future, David envisions HOHA expanding its reach to support the elderly, people living with HIV, and persons with disabilities. He believes that this holistic approach will further embody the love and hope of Christ, extending the organization’s impact to the most vulnerable.

To those considering joining HOHA, David’s message is heartfelt: “This is a place where broken hearts are healed, where education becomes a cornerstone for a better life, and where Christ’s love transforms your journey.”

David Lusaha’s story is a testament to HOHA’s mission of giving every life a living hope. His life, once marred by uncertainty, now shines as a beacon of what is possible when faith, community, and determination intersect. Through his journey, David reminds us all that hope is not just a word—it’s a promise fulfilled in Christ Jesus.
