About Friends School
Friends Children’s Centre was established in 2009 with the mission of providing quality education to street children in the Kawangware slum of Nairobi, Kenya. What began with just 30 pupils has since grown into a vibrant school serving over 400 children, most of whom were previously living on the streets. The centre offers more than academics—it provides daily meals, counseling, and a safe space for children to heal and grow. Led by Joel Idalia, a passionate community leader, the school is a beacon of hope for vulnerable children in Kawangware. Despite limited resources, Friends Children’s Centre remains committed to transforming lives through education, compassion, and opportunity. Its continued growth is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and community support.
Impact Beyond the Classroom
Friends Children’s Centre not only educates but also empowers. Many of its alumni have gone on to join high schools, vocational training centers, and even colleges—breaking the cycle of poverty in their families. Through life-skills training, mentorship, and character development, the school equips its learners with tools to succeed in life, not just in academics. The Centre believes every child deserves a chance to dream, and it continues to be a place where dreams are nurtured and futures are built.
