Peter Mwangi : From Addiction to Leadership
My Story
Testimony of Peter Mwangi – From Hopelessness to Purpose
My name is Peter Mwangi, and I am honored to now serve as the Director of the same ministry that once rescued me from a life heading toward destruction.
I was part of the first group of young people reached through a football team in Kawangware called Buffalo. Many of us were deeply entangled in drugs, crime, and violence—some even lost their lives to mob justice. Though I wasn’t yet deeply addicted, I was headed in the wrong direction—sinking into depression, feeling hopeless, and struggling to find purpose. As the only man in a family of seven, raised by a single mother, I carried heavy responsibility from a young age. Finishing school was a miracle—I was sent home often for lack of fees and ended up attending 13 different schools just to complete high school.
I initially joined the outreach gatherings mostly because of the food. But as I kept coming, I encountered the love of Christ through Fredrick Munuku, the founder of Harvest of Hope Africa, and others who walked with him. Weekly mentorship and counseling began to break something open inside me. Hope and faith began to grow where hopelessness once lived. The love I received made me believe again—and believe differently.
As I became more committed, Fred saw the change and enrolled me in the first group of clients to go through the newly opened Uzima (Life) Rehab Center. That’s where my life was completely transformed. My family rejoiced at the change they saw in me.
After graduating, Fred helped me get a job as a cleaner in town. Though I earned just $60 a month, I worked with passion, encouraged by his words: “It’s not where you stand that defines you, but where you see yourself going.” That, along with Philippians 4:13 (“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”) gave me the strength to keep going.
Later, I was invited to become the Center Manager at the Uzima Drop-In Center. It was a full-circle moment—serving in the same place that once served me. Alongside other reformed addicts, we ministered in prisons, in drug dens, and on the streets—sharing the comfort we received from Christ, and calling others to the same freedom.
Today, 15 years later, I serve as the Director of 6:12 Rehab a project under Harvest of Hope Africa. I’ve gone back to school and completed my diploma, and I look forward to pursuing my degree when God opens the door. We’ve reached hundreds of men and women across the country with the message of healing, hope, and redemption. By the grace and forgiveness of Jesus Christ, we are living testimonies of His power to redeem and restore.
All glory to God.
